Northern Parula Warbler (Parula americana)-- This 4 ½ inch wood warbler breeds in the hardwood forests of Louisiana and elswhere in eastern North America, almost always building its nest in Spanish moss. It winters in the West Indies and Central America. In springtime, it is one of the first wood warblers to cross the Gulf of Mexico. Males show the blackish-red band on the upper breast. Its song is a buzzy trill which ends with a rising zeep. Most birds would show a white crescent above the eye matching that below. This one was photographed in Jean Lafitte National Historic Park on 29 April 2005.
