Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) - Our largest heron, this wading bird uses its long neck and legs to forage for fish and reptiles in shallow water. I once witnessed one dart its pointed bill into marsh grass and come up with a snake which immediately wrapped itself around the bird's neck. As the heron began to fly off with the prize, it lost its grip on the reptile, and the snake fell back into the marsh. Great Blue Herons are common throughout North America, breeding in all 49 states, Mexico and Canada.
