Around the outer edges of the Grand Bazaar are Hans, which in Ottoman times were inns or caravansaries providing accommodation to tradesman and travelers. Now their central courtyards are surrounded by shops selling similar wares. Here the merchants are engaged in a popular activity -- sitting around drinking çay (tea).
