St. Savior Church in Chora (Kariye Camii), now a museum, was originally built as a church in the 11th century. Earlier chruches dating to the 5th century stood on the site. In the early 14th century, during Byzantine times, the church was adorned with spectacular frescoes and mosaics. Several decades after the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, the church was converted to a mosque and the frescoes and mosaics were plastered over. In 1948, the building became a museum and the mosaics and frescoes uncovered.
