Sufi dancer (Whirling Dervish). This dance is part of the Sema ritual practiced by the Mevlevi Order of Sufis in the Ottoman Empire since the 13th century. With the formation of the Republic of Turkey in 1925, Ataturk outlawed the Mevlevi Order in Turkey, but the Sema survives as part of cultural heritage shows performed for tourists.
