The Winged Victory of Samothrace - Now residing in the Louvre, this masterpiece of sculpture from Hellenistic Greece (that period between Alexander the Great and the annexation of Greece by Rome) was discovered by a Frenchman on the Greek Island of Samothrace in 1863. It is thought to date from ca. 200 BC.
