Lionfish are voracious predators of the Pacific Ocean. They are thought to have been introduced by benighted aquarium enthusiasts into the Bahamas in the early 1990's. With no natural predators in Atlantic waters Lionfish have spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean. Studies show that within weeks of introduction of Lionfish onto a reef, about 80% of juvenile reef fish are decimated. Divemasters in Roatan bring Hawaiian Slings on every dive and kill each Lionfish they come across. Four are seen in this photo. |
