The Old Quarter of Hanoi is the oldest continuously developed area in Vietnam. In the 11th century artisans and craftsmen offering similar services began to organize themselves along the same streets. The 36 streets of the Old Quarter became known by names denoting the services offered and the crafts praticed on them. Hang means street, and in the Old Quarter you will find Hang Thiec (tin street), Hang Dong (brass street), Hang Ga (chicken street), and Hang Bac (silver street), among others. This tradition doesn't hold universally true today, as the merchant above was not located on Hang Tre (bamboo street). |
